Qualifications:

  • Current licensure in good standing in the state of practice.
  • Evidence of 2 years of perioperative circulating nursing experience within recent years; scrub experience preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the efforts of the multidisciplinary treatment team for the patients under his/her care.

Job Summary:

The Operating Room Technician performs the scrubbing duties for operative procedures and assists the surgeon and Registered Nurse circulator as directed. The Operating Room Technician is responsible to the unit supervisor for assigned operating room.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency
  • Graduation from an accredited surgical technician training program or an equivalent training program (i.e. military, hospital etc) is recommended.
  • BCLS certification
  • Evidence of 2 years of current operating room scrub experience
  • Knowledge of surgical instruments, suture material, power and specialty equipment, drug and supply terminology
  • Able to perform the capabilities of the job (see attached)

Responsibilities:

  • Cooperatively participates in patient care activities with co-workers.

  • Keeps informed of changes in practice and attends in-services when offered.
  • Maintains and controls all surgical equipment and supplies, checks for expiration dates on trays, supplies and equipment.
  • Gathers appropriate equipment, supplies and instruments, checks equipment for safety and opens sterile supplies with proper technique.
  • Assists in the preparation of the operative site and assists with the proper and safe positioning of the patient on the operating room table.
  • Assists the surgical team with the donning of surgical gowns, self gowns, set up of sterile field, assists with draping the patient and accounts for all surgical items used on the sterile field.
  • Passes instruments, sutures and supplies to the operative team for all surgical specialties.
  • Safely breaks down the contaminated set up after completion of the case in a manner that prevents the spread of contamination.
  • Safely operates steam autoclaves, mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Assists in the transport of the patient both to and from the Operating Room.
  • The technician may not provide patient services that require the skill of a licensed nurse.

Position Summary:

An allied health care professional who accepts responsibility and accountability for the assignment that is given by Advanced Hospital Staffing (AHS) to perform the duties of first and/or second assistant to the attending surgeon/physician performing the surgical procedure, within the scope of practice of Non-Physician Surgical Assistant as defined in the delineation of privileges, including but not limited to, identification of anatomical landmarks, securing blood vessels, recognizing pathological situations and furnishing and securing an adequate and proper exposure of the operative field and performing whatever duties delegated to him/her by the operating surgeon.

Requirements:

  1. Graduate of a foreign medical school, fully licensed to practice medicine in the country where he/she has attained his/her medical degree preferably with graduate training in surgery or a discipline thereof; and completion of an approved Surgical Assistant training program; or a satisfactorily credentialed and experienced Registered Nurse Operating Room, Registered Nurse First Assist, Certified Surgical Tech/First Assist, or Physician’s Assistant.
  2. A minimum of two years of practice in the U.S. in the capacity of surgeon assistant is preferred.
  3. Current BCLS/CPR certified.
  4. Current Certification through the National Surgical Assistants Association (NSAA), American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA) or National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) as a first assistant.
  5. Current License, or Registration or its equivalent.
  6. Meets and maintains employee health requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. The Surgical Assistant possesses a working knowledge of operating room procedures with respect to attire, infection control, and is familiar with individual requirements and recommended practices of compliance.
  2. The Surgical Assistant must have the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon, and other team members, with respect to the requirements of a particular surgical procedure.
  3. The Surgical Assistant must be able to demonstrate and maintain dexterity sufficient to successful completion of his/her assistant duties on each particular procedure.
  4. The Surgical Assistant must maintain a professional attitude with respect to dignity, privacy, and safety of patients.
  5. The Surgical Assistant must possess the ability to only function within the limits of his/her ability, within the scope of his/her professional license, and within the policies of the facility in which they are working.

    Work Environment:

    1. Wear approved scrub attire, displaying name Tag issued by AHS and individual facilities as applicable.
    2. Wears clean white lab coat when leaving the Operating Room Suite or changes into personal clothing.
    3. Incorporates universal precautions into daily performance of the job.
    4. Incorporates safety rules and regulations into the daily performance of the job.
    5. Physical requirements include, but are not limited to, the ability to stand for long periods of time, lifting objects weighing of 40 pounds or more, stooping and bending.
    6. Encounters certain hazardous materials including, but are not limited to, radiation, radioactive materials, LASER beams and plume, anesthetic materials and gases, etc.
    7. In addition to scheduled cases, accepts assignment to cover emergency call duty on a 24 hour basis, including weekdays, weekends and holidays, covering surgical procedures and labor and delivery departments as required.
    8. Follows the Policies and Procedures of the individual hospital/surgery centers to which they are assigned as well as the Policies and Procedures of AHS.
    9. Treats all documentation from the patient records with utmost respect and confidentiality. Refrain from copying distribution, or reproduction of same except on as-needed basis. Treats such documentation with extreme care and protects the privacy and confidentiality of all documents related to patients in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations (HIPAA).

    Scope of Practice (must remain within the scope of practice as defined by statute and by Rules and Regulations):

    Knowledgeable in the use of:

    • Specific equipment needed per procedure
    • Assisting in moving and positioning the patient per surgeon’s directive
    • Inserting and removal of Foley urinary bladder catheter per surgeon’s directive
    • Placing the pneumatic tourniquet per surgeon’s directive
    • Confirming procedure in the documentation and with surgeon
    • Draping the patient within the surgeon’s guidelines
    • Providing retraction of tissue and organs for optimal visualization with regard to tissue type and appropriate retraction instrument and/or technique per surgeon’s directive
    • Assisting in maintaining hemostasis by direct pressure, using and applying of appropriate surgical instrument for the task, placement of ties, placement of ligatures, applying chemical hemostatic agents, or other measures as directed by the surgeon
    • Using the electrocautery mono and bi-polar per surgeon’s directive
    • Clamping, ligation and cutting of tissue per surgeon’s directive
    • Harvesting saphenous vein including skin incision per surgeon’s directive
    • Closing of all wound layers (fascia, subcutaneous and skin) as per surgeon’s directive
    • Inserting drainage tubes per surgeon’s directive
    • Selecting and applying wound dressing per surgeon’s directive
    • Performing any other duties or procedures incidental to the surgical procedure deemed necessary and directed by the surgeon

    Professional Code:

    1. The Surgical Assistant should maintain a working relationship with all members of the operating room team and adjunct hospital personnel based on trust, honesty, confidence and respect.
    2. The Surgical Assistant should seek input, be willing to accept praise as well as criticism and possess the ability to transform such criticism in a constructive manner.
    3. The Surgical Assistant must be involved in “self” assessment and evaluation of each surgical procedure that he/she will be required to assist on. The process of formulating clear direction for best utilization of assistant skills should be mandatory for full benefit to patient, surgeon, and other members of the operative team.
    4. The Surgical Assistant must keep abreast of new technology with respect to surgical intervention and its pertinence to patient management.
    5. The Surgical Assistant must maintain a quality standard of continuing medical education, as described, and set forth by AHS standards.
    6. The Surgical Assistant must be aware of the individual requirements or techniques of individual surgeons.
    7. The Surgical Assistant must have adequate knowledge of basic sciences as required by his/her duties incidental to a particular surgical procedure.
    8. The Surgical Assistant must be fully aware of his/her position with respect to maintenance of a sterile operative field and have a working knowledge of the basic principles and concepts of sterilization and infection control.
    9. The Surgical Assistant will possess a working knowledge of all Operating Room procedures with respect to attire, infection control, and be familiar with individual requirements and recommended practices of compliance.
    10. The Surgical Assistant will accept responsibility for his/her integrity with respect to maintenance and compliance, to and of these policies. This will not only promote the individual assistant but will be of best interest to AHS.
    11. The Surgical Assistant must have the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon, and other team members, with respect to the requirements of a particular surgical procedure.
    12. The Surgical Assistant must be able to demonstrate and maintain dexterity sufficient to successful completion of his/her assistant duties on that procedure.
    13. The Surgical Assistant must maintain a professional attitude with respect to the dignity, privacy, and safety of the patient.
